Inter-project dependencies

I would love to be able to visualize dependencies between projects. I recognize that there are some major technical challenges to this, though perhaps it could be accomplished through project calendars? e.g. Project A has task A.1 on the Project A calendar, and Project B has task B.1 on Project B calendar. I could choose to connect the projects or allow two-way calendar access, so that Project A could look at the Project B calendar and not schedule task A.1 until after task B.1 is complete. Does that make sense?

Hi Devon,

Thank you for sharing your idea — I understand exactly what you’re describing. You’d like the ability to set dependencies between tasks that belong to different projects, so that one project’s schedule can be influenced by the completion of tasks in another project, potentially by leveraging shared or connected calendars.

Currently, Gantter supports dependencies within a single project file but does not offer a built-in way to directly link tasks across separate projects. The kind of cross-project dependency management you’re describing would require both:

  • A way for projects to share scheduling data in real time.

  • Logic in the scheduler to respect and update those inter-project constraints.

While Gantter doesn’t yet have native cross-project dependencies, your suggestion is a valuable one. I’ll pass it along to our product team for consideration, as we know this type of feature can be very helpful for organizations managing multiple interrelated projects.

In the meantime, a possible workaround is to manually track those linked tasks via shared milestones or by consolidating both projects into a single file for scheduling purposes, then separating them again if needed. Let me know if you have any other questions and have a great weekend!

Best regards, Sophia
