Cannot change start, finish, and duration dates without it affecting the others

I just want to be able to manually enter start and finish dates on a simple Gantt chart, but it keeps defaulting to these weird dates and making up its own duration, and I can't figure it out.
Also, the duration doesn't make sense, it will have a date range such as 4/15/2021 - 4/20/2021, but the duration will say something crazy like 47 days? What am I missing?
